Noland Secretary Desk
Due to the scarcity of books in Colonial America, the combination of a slant top desk with a bookcase didn’t become popular until the mid-18th century. After its introduction, the secretary desk became one of the premier expressions of cabinetmaking. As letter writing grew in importance, the secretary desk underwent a variety of stylistic transformations. Designs inspired by Thomas Chippendale, such as the Nine Pane Secretary Desk, were the benchmark of good taste in America well into the 19th century.
